Snack and fast-food cash register: what to check

In a snack bar everything comes down to throughput: the register must ring up fast, send orders to the kitchen without re-keying and announce ready orders. Here is what to check.

A cash register for a snack bar or fast-food restaurant rings up short, repeated orders quickly, above all combos of a burger, a side and a drink. It must also send every ticket to the kitchen without re-keying and announce ready orders, so the queue keeps moving at the height of the rush.

What sets a fast-food register apart from a restaurant one?

In a snack bar you are not managing a table that settles in: you are managing throughput. Orders are short, frequent and often the same from one customer to the next. Every tap saved at the counter shows up in the length of the queue. The register has to match how an order is actually called out, not a sit-down menu.

How do you build a combo in a few taps?

Burger, side, drink: the Maxilog point of sale guides each step of the combo, with its sizes and extras, on an illustrated item grid. Options are laid out the way they are called at the counter, and orders can be put on hold to serve the next customer. The ticket then goes to the kitchen with the same menu as on your other channels.

Is an ordering kiosk useful in fast food?

Often, yes, because it takes orders in parallel: throughput no longer depends on the number of people behind the counter. With the ordering kiosk, customers choose at the welcome screen whether they eat in or take away, customise their burger, pay and get their number. Suggestions and options appear at the right step of the journey instead of being shouted over a crowded counter.

How does the kitchen keep up?

On the kitchen display, each ticket shows how long it has been waiting and changes colour as it nears the limit. Orders from the counter, the kiosk, the website, Uber Eats and Deliveroo land on the same board. The oldest stays the most visible, and each station (grill, fryer, assembly…) sees only what concerns it. To go further, read our guide to the restaurant KDS.

How do you announce ready orders without shouting them?

When a cook confirms a ticket on the kitchen display, the number moves from “in preparation” to “ready” on the wall status screen. Nobody types anything: the screen cannot contradict the kitchen. The counter no longer answers “is number 44 ready?” and keeps serving. For takeaway orders, a pager can also be assigned to the order and freed when the customer hands it back.

What about online orders and delivery platforms?

Maxilog’s online ordering site carries your brand, runs on your domain, takes no commission per order, and accepts Stripe, PayPal or payment on collection. Uber Eats and Deliveroo orders arrive in the same queue as the rest, with no separate tablet, and the menu is set once for every channel.

Which questions should you ask before choosing?

  1. Can a combo be built in a few taps, with its options and extras?
  2. Do orders from the register, the kiosk and the platforms reach the same kitchen display?
  3. How does the customer know the order is ready?
  4. Is the menu the same everywhere, or must it be updated several times?
  5. For platform orders: one more tablet, or a single queue?
  6. What is included in the quote?

Maxilog pricing is set by quote, depending on the number of sites, terminals and products. To see the full journey with your own menu, book a demo. If you are still comparing equipment, also read our guide to choosing a restaurant cash register.
